Do you like to fit in with the locals when you’re on holiday? How about finding some local gems to try or take home with you? Well, when staying at Villa Andalucía you’re in luck. You’re in the heart of the Axarquía and colourful and lively markets are a plenty in this region! These bustling hubs of trade are not just about shopping; they immerse you in local customs and showcase the rich Málaga culture. In the summer there are often night markets at a towns feria or along the coast, sometimes you can shop until 2am if you wanted to!

Cómpeta has its own market on a Saturday morning on the main car park, it is not very big, but it has everything you need from veg stores, cheese, sweets and spices, ceramics, plants, clothes and bedding and the usual nik-nak stalls.

The Essence of Traditional Markets

The Axarquía’s markets are a vibrant testament to the traditions of the region. The personalised service and direct interaction with vendors offer a deep dive into local customs, setting these markets apart from the impersonal experience of supermarkets. Most markets are a mix of food, clothing and handcrafted goods. You can get anything from sunglasses, new trainers and jewelry to organic produce or a beautiful new ceramic dish for your kitchen!

My favourite is Caleta market on a Saturday, it has a very large selection of stalls and plenty of bars to stop and have a rest, plus it’s close to the beach!
